Square Footage Formulas by Shape

Rectangle

Multiply length × width

Area = Length × Width

Example: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft

L-Shape

Split into two rectangles and subtract overlap

Area = Main + Wing - Overlap

Or: Calculate each rectangle separately and add

Triangle

Base × Height ÷ 2, or use Heron's formula

Area = (Base × Height) / 2

Heron's: s=(a+b+c)/2, Area=√(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c))

Circle

π × radius²

Area = π × r²

Or: Area = π × (diameter/2)²
